As with other Japanese Americans on the West Coast, farming families were forcibly removed from their homes during World War II, with farmers in many cases having to leave their farms with crops in the fields unharvested. While some were able to leave their homes and properties in the care of sympathetic non-Japanese American friends, most were not able to. Many with agricultural background took seeds with them to the concentration camps where they planted\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Gardens_in_camp\" title=\"Gardens in camp\">\n   gardens\n  </a>\n  in all of the camps. Others were recruited to do agricultural labor outside of the camps.\n  <i>\n   Forsaken Fields\n  </i>\n  goes on to cover the difficult\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Return_to_West_Coast\" title=\"Return to West Coast\">\n   return home\n  </a>\n  after the war and the\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Terrorist_incidents_against_West_Coast_returnees\" title=\"Terrorist incidents against West Coast returnees\">\n   terroristic receptions\n  </a>\n  many faced.
