During World War II, she and her family were forcibly removed from their homes and sent first to the\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Pomona_(detention_facility)\" title=\"Pomona (detention facility)\">\n   Pomona Assembly Center\n  </a>\n  , then to the Heart Mountain, Wyoming, concentration camp. She and her husband, Kenji Sumi, left Heart Mountain for\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Resettlement_in_New_York\" title=\"Resettlement in New York\">\n   New York\n  </a>\n  in May of 1944 to join a younger sister. She later returned to San Francisco in 1950.
