As was the case for a sizable minority of Nisei youth, she had been sent to Japan for her education, having arrived there three years prior. She attends a boarding school and spends holidays with the Kodamas, a wealthy childless couple who are family friends. On a holiday, she meets Jobo Endo, a fellow Nisei, who is in Japan attending college. Courtship ensues. Recognizing the difficulties they would face in Japan as the war heats up, Jobo suggests that Mie ask the Kodamas for money to return to the U.S. However, the Kodamas had hoped to marry off Mie to a grand nephew. Though they consent to Jobo and Mie getting married, they are stuck in Japan as it enters war with the U.S. Facing hunger and other hardships, Jobo and Mie survive the war. Meanwhile, their families in the U.S. are sent to concentration camps; Mie's father dies in camp. Both families \"resettle\" in the Midwest, and Mie's family sends them money that allows them to return. But the time away had damaged relationships, and short stints with both families fail to work out. Eventually they move to California, where Jobo finds sudden success as an agent in the booming real estate market. But that success leads to the couple drifting apart, and Jobo eventually leaves Mie for another woman. But Haru's death in childbirth after the birth of their second son changes Kazuyuki's life decisively. He sends the two boys to live with his mother in Japan and becomes a migrant laborer. He later brings his Kibei sons back to the U.S., where they start a new farming venture in Orange County, California, this one less successful. Then comes World War II and the three end up in an Arizona concentration camp in Arizona. While Kazuyuki works as a mess hall chef and comes to be vaguely satisfied with his life in camp, his ambitious older son Isamu volunteers for the army, only to die in combat in Italy. His second son Noriyuki initially decides to return to Japan on an exchange ship, but changes his mind when he falls in love with a\n \n Nisei\n \n girl he had met in camp. When the narrator reads it to a group of internees, they are greatly moved.","url_title":"A Letter (short story)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["short stories"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Fiction"],"rg_theme":["Communication – verbal and nonverbal","Facing darkness","Isolation","Power of words"],"rg_availability":["Limited availability"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Short Stories","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-file-text"},{"id":"The Long Journey and the Short Ride (short story)","model":"article","index":"21 21/{'value': 44, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/The%20Long%20Journey%20and%20the%20Short%20Ride%20(short%20story)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/The%20Long%20Journey%20and%20the%20Short%20Ride%20(short%20story)/"},"title":"The Long Journey and the Short Ride (short story)","description":"Seemingly autobiographical story by\n \n Toshio Mori\n \n about the author and his brother, a paralyzed veteran of the\n \n 442nd Regimental Combat Team\n \n , recalling the latter's visit to\n \n Topaz\n \n prior to shipping out for combat in Europe. The author and his mother get a pass to leave Topaz for the first time since they had arrived in order to see the brother off at the train station. Their apprehensions about being outside the camp are eased by a white family—who had also just seen a son off to war—who offer them a ride to town. Shifting back to the present of the story, the author notes the successful recovery that his brother has made since the war and both brothers lament that neither of their parents lived to see that recovery. A. Sasaki that portrays the life of a\n \n Nisei\n \n woman looking both backwards and forwards after the death of one of her daughters. Born and raised in San Francisco where her family ran a boarding house, the unnamed woman graduated from the University of California before being incarcerated with her family in\n \n Tanforan\n \n and\n \n Topaz\n \n during World War II. Returning to San Francisco after the war having married a\n \n Kibei\n \n man she had known from before the war, she has four daughters while her husband works in the flower industry. Devoted to her daughters, she is at a loss as they leave the house to pursue their own lives and after one dies in a mountain climbing accident. Her daughters' efforts to bring her out of her torpor are largely unsuccessful until one gives her a loom, through which she is able to express the feelings she cannot verbalize.","url_title":"The Loom (short story)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["short stories"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Fiction"],"rg_theme":["Communication – verbal and nonverbal","Facing darkness","Loneliness as destructive force","Motherhood","Power of silence"],"rg_readinglevel":["Adult"],"rg_availability":["Widely available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Short Stories","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-file-text"},{"id":"Makapuu Bay (short story)","model":"article","index":"23 23/{'value': 44, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Makapuu%20Bay%20(short%20story)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Makapuu%20Bay%20(short%20story)/"},"title":"Makapuu Bay (short story)","description":"Short story by\n \n Wakako Yamauchi\n \n about a divorced middle-aged Japanese American writer who goes to a literary conference in Honolulu where she runs into an old boyfriend from the war years. They become a couple and continue to see each other when she resettles in Chicago while he attends the\n \n Military Intelligence Service Language School\n \n in Minnesota. But her father's illness—and eventual death—forces her to return to Poston, while Mitch heads off to war, and they lose touch.
