When Devi asks Adam to help him find his father, Adam is faced with a moral conflict: should he risk both his own safety and his friendship in order to do what is right? He is also still deeply affected by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the urge to scapegoat the Japanese Americans, despite his urge to help and defend his friend.","url_title":"A Boy No More (book)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["books"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 7-8","Grades 9-12"],"rg_genre":["Young Adult","History"],"rg_theme":["Coming of age","Growing up – pain or pleasure","Overcoming – fear, weakness, vice","Patriotism – positive side or complications"],"rg_readinglevel":["Grades 7-8","Grades 9-12"],"rg_availability":["Widely available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Books","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-book"},{"id":"Memories of Pop (short story)","model":"article","index":"1 1/{'value': 5, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Memories%20of%20Pop%20(short%20story)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Memories%20of%20Pop%20(short%20story)/"},"title":"Memories of Pop (short story)","description":"Short story by Jiro Saito about a young college dropout\n \n Sansei\n \n returning home to San Diego for the funeral of his estranged father. Written in the first person voice of Mas Mayeda, it is set in around 1960. As the story begins, Mas gets a call from his sister Rose informing him of their father's death. Disowned by his father after dropping out of UC Berkeley's engineering program to become a writer, Mas had not seen the family in three years. Upon his return, Rose tells him that their father, though stubborn, indicated that he wanted Mas to return. Before the funeral, Mas sees old family photos that tell their story: his parents' wedding in 1927 (his\n \n Issei\n \n father married a\n \n Nisei\n \n woman from San Diego); a successful farm; his father becoming a community leader; his father's subsequent arrest after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the family's removal and incarceration at\n \n Poston\n \n ; and their\n \n return after the war\n \n when they had to start over, his father working as a gardener and his mother as a cook. After the funeral, his mother gives Mas an envelope from his father containing a receipt for a radio purchased in 1949; his mother recounts the story of that radio, which became symbolic of his father's fortunes turning around after the difficulties of the postwar years.","url_title":"Memories of Pop (short story)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["short stories"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Historical Fiction"],"rg_theme":["Family – blessing or curse","Forgiveness"],"rg_availability":["No availability"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Short Stories","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-file-text"},{"id":"Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration During World War II and a Librarian Who Made a Difference (book)","model":"article","index":"2 2/{'value': 5, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Dear%20Miss%20Breed:%20True%20Stories%20of%20the%20Japanese%20American%20Incarceration%20During%20World%20War%20II%20and%20a%20Librarian%20Who%20Made%20a%20Difference%20(book)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Dear%20Miss%20Breed:%20True%20Stories%20of%20the%20Japanese%20American%20Incarceration%20During%20World%20War%20II%20and%20a%20Librarian%20Who%20Made%20a%20Difference%20(book)/"},"title":"Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration During World War II and a Librarian Who Made a Difference (book)","description":"Book for young adult readers by Joanne Oppenheim that tells the story of the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans through the wartime correspondence between a San Diego librarian and the incarcerated young people whom she had befriended at the library.","url_title":"Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration During World War II and a Librarian Who Made a Difference (book)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["books"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 7-8","Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Young Adult"],"rg_theme":["Coming of age","Communication – verbal and nonverbal","Heroism – real and perceived","Injustice"],"rg_readinglevel":["Grades 7-8"],"rg_availability":["Widely available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Books","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-book"},{"id":"Dear Miss Breed (play)","model":"article","index":"3 3/{'value': 5, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Dear%20Miss%20Breed%20(play)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Dear%20Miss%20Breed%20(play)/"},"title":"Dear Miss Breed (play)","description":"Play about a San Diego librarian who corresponded with incarcerated Japanese American children during World War II.
