After a brief introduction that introduces Tashiro's family, the story begins on Pearl Harbor day when Kenneth—nicknamed \"Iggy\"—hears about the start of the war after exiting an Abbott and Costello movie. He and his family move from Los Angeles to Del Rey in an attempt to avoid incarceration, but they are eventually removed from Sanger to Gila in August of 1942. His father, Kenji Tashiro, is a journalist, who becomes the editor of the\n \n camp newspaper\n \n , before leaving to join the army at age 37. His mother, eight months pregnant at the time of the removal, stays behind for a time, rejoining the family later with the baby girl. Twelve when he entered the camp, Tashiro's perspective is purely that of an active teenager, so there is relatively little on camp politics and civil rights, with the focus instead being on friends, sports, Boy Scouts, and other aspects of teenage camp life. The story ends when Iggy leaves camp in March of 1945 to live with an aunt and uncle in Minneapolis.",

Finding a small apartment in Little Tokyo and a part time job in a diner, he finds a niche in starting to counsel the veterans who would gather in a Little Tokyo pool hall. That work eventually leads to a paying job with the Veterans Administration. The story also incorporates Hamamoto's concentration camp experience and how his family was able to keep their house with the help of neighbors. The title comes from the address of the pool hall and the veterans' customary greeting to each other.",

Written in the first person voice of Mas Mayeda, it is set in around 1960. As the story begins, Mas gets a call from his sister Rose informing him of their father's death. Disowned by his father after dropping out of UC Berkeley's engineering program to become a writer, Mas had not seen the family in three years. Upon his return, Rose tells him that their father, though stubborn, indicated that he wanted Mas to return. Before the funeral, Mas sees old family photos that tell their story: his parents' wedding in 1927 (his\n \n Issei\n \n father married a\n \n Nisei\n \n woman from San Diego); a successful farm; his father becoming a community leader; his father's subsequent arrest after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the family's removal and incarceration at\n \n Poston\n \n ; and their\n \n return after the war\n \n when they had to start over, his father working as a gardener and his mother as a cook. After the funeral, his mother gives Mas an envelope from his father containing a receipt for a radio purchased in 1949; his mother recounts the story of that radio, which became symbolic of his father's fortunes turning around after the difficulties of the postwar years.",
