Filmmaker Bob Matsumoto was inspired by the testimony of Japanese Americans before the\n \n Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians\n \n , and sought to recapture the voices of those who were no longer able to tell their stories. Matsumoto updated the film twice, once after the passage of the\n \n Civil Liberties Act of 1988\n \n and once after the retroactive awarding of\n \n Congressional Medal of Honor\n \n awards to Japanese Americans who had been overlooked for the award in the 1940s.\n \n Voices Long Silent\n \n was used to accompany the exhibition\n \n\n The Art of Gaman\n \n\n and included in the DVD release of\n \n\n The Story Behind the Objects\n \n\n , a video specially produced by an about the show.",
