The film is based on interviews with numerous veterans as well as with their wives and adult children. Among topics touched on in\n \n Beyond Barbed Wire\n \n are friction between men from Hawai'i and the continental U.S. during basic training; the unusual story of Korean American Colonel Young O. Kim; the\n \n rescue of the Lost Battalion\n \n , and the continuing legacy of the veterans for their families. One unique aspect of the film is its treatment of the controversy over the role of Major General\n \n John Dahlquist\n \n , whom some veterans feel used the Nisei as \"cannon fodder.\" In telling the story of the mass incarceration, the filmmakers include scenes from the\n \n Japanese American National Museum\n \n and the Smithsonian Institution's\n \n\n A More Perfect Union: Japanese Americans and the U.S. Constitution\n \n\n . The film concludes with scenes from a reunion at the 50th anniversary of the war's end in Honolulu in 1995. Featuring on-camera host Deborah Hammons, the episode includes three segments: : an extended interview with Paul Tsuneishi on his incarceration experience and subsequent military service; a profile of Kaz Uriu, one of the only Heart Mountain inmates to later settle in Wyoming as a farmer, based on an interview with his daughter; and local efforts to build a memorial at the site—which was dedicated in July 1978—featuring interviews with local residents. Produced by Wyoming Public Television, it was funded by the Wyoming Council for the Humanities ad Kennecott Energy. It has been made available online as part of the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.","url_title":"Main Street, Wyoming: Heart Mountain (film)","categories":["Chroniclers"],"rg_rgmediatype":["films"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Documentary"],"rg_theme":["Injustice","Power of the past"],"rg_availability":["Widely available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Films and Video","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-film"},{"id":"Heiji (short story)","model":"article","index":"3 3/{'value': 7, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Heiji%20(short%20story)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Heiji%20(short%20story)/"},"title":"Heiji (short story)","description":"Short story by Jeff Tsuyoshi Matsuda about a disheveled elderly\n \n Nisei\n \n widower who goes to a empty field in his Westchester, California, neighborhood every day for reasons that no one can figure out. In slowly revealing the reason for his quest, Heiji Taguma's wartime family history is revealed. His family had farmed twenty acres in the area before the war, but lost their crops and their farm in the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Heiji's father Masu was among the\n \n Issei\n \n arrested by the FBI and was taken to the\n \n Bismarck\n \n , North Dakota internment camp, eventually rejoining his family at\n \n Manzanar\n \n . But he returned a broken man: while Heiji\n \n resettled in Chicago\n \n , he refused to leave Manzanar and died there just after the end of the war. Heiji's odd ritual seemed to have been triggered by the death of his wife Keiko, who had once cooked all his meals and washed and selected his clothes.","url_title":"Heiji (short story)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["short stories"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Fiction"],"rg_theme":["Female roles","Injustice","Power of the past"],"rg_availability":["No availability"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Short Stories","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-file-text"},{"id":"A Tradition of Honor (film)","model":"article","index":"4 4/{'value': 7, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/A%20Tradition%20of%20Honor%20(film)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/A%20Tradition%20of%20Honor%20(film)/"},"title":"A Tradition of Honor (film)","description":"Feature length documentary telling the stories of Japanese American soldiers in the\n \n 100th Infantry Battalion\n \n ,\n \n 442nd Regimental Combat Team\n \n , and\n \n Military Intelligence Service\n \n , produced in 2002 by the Go For Broke National Education Foundation.","url_title":"A Tradition of Honor (film)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["films"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Documentary"],"rg_theme":["Heroism – real and perceived","Role of men","War – glory, necessity, pain, tragedy"],"rg_availability":["Widely available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Films and Video","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-film"},{"id":"Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawai`i's Japanese Americans During WWII (film)","model":"article","index":"5 5/{'value': 7, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Removed%20by%20Force:%20The%20Eviction%20of%20Hawai%60i's%20Japanese%20Americans%20During%20WWII%20(film)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Removed%20by%20Force:%20The%20Eviction%20of%20Hawai%60i's%20Japanese%20Americans%20During%20WWII%20(film)/"},"title":"Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawai`i's Japanese Americans During WWII (film)","description":"Documentary film by Ryan Kawamoto about Japanese Americans in Hawai'i who were excluded or removed from their homes, but not interned, along with the 1990s efforts by the Honolulu Chapter of the\n \n Japanese American Citizens League\n \n to secure redress for this group under the\n \n Civil Liberties Act of 1988\n \n .","url_title":"Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawai`i's Japanese Americans During WWII (film)","categories":["Arts"],"rg_rgmediatype":["films"],"rg_interestlevel":["Grades 9-12","Adult"],"rg_genre":["Documentary","History"],"rg_theme":["Empowerment","Injustice","Quest for discovery"],"rg_availability":["Available"],"rg_rgmediatype_label":"Films and Video","rg_rgmediatype_icon":"fa-film"},{"id":"Rabbit in the Moon (film)","model":"article","index":"6 6/{'value': 7, 'relation': 'eq'}","links":{"html":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Rabbit%20in%20the%20Moon%20(film)/","json":"https://resourceguide.densho.org/api/3.0/articles/Rabbit%20in%20the%20Moon%20(film)/"},"title":"Rabbit in the Moon (film)","description":"Documentary film written and directed by Emiko Omori and produced by Omori with her sister Chizuko on Japanese Americans in American concentration camps during World War II that highlights resistance and other lesser told stories.
