Starting in her late forties, she began authoring books for young people, many of which focused on history and on civil rights related topics, with her best known book likely\n    <i>\n     Freedom's Children: Young Civil Rights Activists Tell Their Own Stories\n    </i>\n    (1993), which won the Jane Addams Peace Award.\n   </p>\n   <p>\n    In the book's preface, Levine wrote that she was urged to write the\n    <i>\n     A Fence Away From Freedom\n    </i>\n    by friends who lived in Cody, Wyoming, near the site of the\n    <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Heart_Mountain\" title=\"Heart Mountain\">\n     Heart Mountain\n    </a>\n    camp. She visited the site in 1992 and went on to interview many former inmates from the various concentration camps. While most ranged in age from six to the early twenties, she also interviewed some adults who were key historical figures in the camps, such as Harry Ueno (35 at the time of his incarceration) and Frank Emi (25).
