She grew up partially in California and had heard of the Japanese American incarceration but knew little about it. She was inspired to write the book by a 2017 episode of the \"Stuff You Missed in History Class\" podcast, wondering what it would be like to be an Italian American girl who was in love with a Japanese American boy. She spent a year doing research online and reading Japanese American memoirs and also struck up a correspondence with\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Manzanar_National_Historic_Site\" title=\"Manzanar National Historic Site\">\n   Manzanar National Historic Site\n  </a>\n  Park Ranger Patricia Biggs, eventually visiting the site shortly before the book's publication.\n  <sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-ftnt_ref1_1-0\">\n   <a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref1-1\">\n    [1]\n   </a>\n  </sup>\n </p>\n <p>\n  The history is generally handled well, and many real people at Manzanar make appearances including\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Karl_Yoneda\" title=\"Karl Yoneda\">\n   Karl and Elaine Yoneda\n  </a>\n  ,\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Ralph_Merritt\" title=\"Ralph Merritt\">\n   Ralph Merritt\n  </a>\n  , and\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Fred_Tayama\" title=\"Fred Tayama\">\n   Fred Tayama\n  </a>\n  . An \"About the History\" section at the end of the book provides some background on the Japanese American incarceration and notes some of the historical liberties that were taken. Morrill writes that she decided to send the Hamasakis to Manzanar even though they likely would have been sent to\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"https://encyclopedia.densho.org/wiki/Santa_Anita_(detention_facility)\" title=\"Santa Anita (detention facility)\">\n   Santa Anita\n  </a>\n  .
